Goud

liefs,
Kim

The last day

Inside 3Today is the last day of THEEkenen 2.

That means that for 30 days I have guided a group of wonderfully creative women into making daily drawings. Not because I wanted to teach them how to draw, but because the THEEkenen process supports you in finding a daily moment of peace for yourself.

Some time to breathe.
Some time to rest.

However:
I haven’t made a single drawing in these 30 days.

All I have been doing is coloring.
And I can’t wait to tell you why.

If I am completely honest: for me, THEEkenen didn’t start at my first THEEkening.
For me, THEEkenen started with coloring.

Last year, just before the summer vacation, one of the children in my class gave me a going away present. A coloring book. So sweet!

Now I must admit that I don’t really like things that are ‘IN’ at the moment – if everyone is doing it, why bother – but pretty soon I noticed that I actually loved to color.

I loved it so much that the coloring book became an inspiration source for my own drawings – and I colored those too.
Slowly they became a book ,
and another book,
they started to appear in my journals
and eventually turned into THEEkenen.

However, while my wonderful THEEkenen Tribe spend this past month drawing, I went back to my first coloring book.

Because, even thought I had finished most of the coloring pages, I had a feeling I wasn’t quite finished with it.

And I wasn’t.

Because the pages missed a little ME.

Slowly, page by page, I turned the book into a Kim-book, a creative journal, a play-book. And I used other coloring pages to create small gifts and other juice items.

And like almost anything else I do, I turned my own creative process into a workshop:

Inside 4

In ‘Inside the Lines’ I will show many different ways of adding a little YOU, a little more meaning and a little more play to the pages.
I will also show you how to recycle and ‘upcycle’ :) your pages.

‘Inside the Lines’ is absolutly NOT the kind of intensive workshop that Creative Fitness or THEEkenen have been.

During the 6 weeks you will receive 12 lessons, so 2 a week.  You see, I am in the mood for something small & easy & colorful – I want you to have enough time for your coloring – and your life :).

If you are interested in joining this is what you need to know:

Time: 6 weeksInside 6
Start: May 25th
End: July 4th
Lesson: 2 Lessons a week, so 12 in total
Price: 15 USD (or 25 USD if you sign up with a friend)

There will be a private Facebookgroup for this workshop, inspiration on a Pinterest Board and I will also send you some coloring pages.
You’ll be able to download all the PDF’s, so you can access them forever.

Please note that I will not be teaching you any coloring techniques.
This will be an easy and fun workshop, about the things you can do with your colored pages.

Yes, I want to color INSIDE the lines!

The Duchess and the DuTchess

Why?
Why are you called “The Dutchess of Orange”?

That’s a question I’ve been getting a lot lately – so here’s part 1 of the answer :).

In 1970 a New York’ writer called Helene Hanff wrote a wonderful book called “84 Charing Cross Road”. And although it was loved by only a relatively small amount of people, they loved it so wildly and passionately, it quickly became a cult book. And I am proud to be part of the cult.

In the book you’ll find the letters Helene exchanged over a period of 20 years with a London bookshop on Charing Cross Road, ending with the dead of her – by then – dear friend and book supplier Frank Doel. The book is enchanting, sweet, warm and so beautifully written I never get tired of it.
Helene 1And luckily for me the end of the book wasn’t the end of the story. Because in 1971, Helene finally had enough money – and courage – to visit London, the city she had longed to see for so long. And about that adventure she wrote a second book, called “The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street”.

And I can honestly say I could read that book every day for the rest of my life and never be bored by it.
Helene 2The stories she tells and the compelling way in which she tells them go straight to my heart. Some of her (other) books I have read more often than others, but I know phrases from all books by heart.

My favorite is the Duchess of Bloomsbury Street. In Helene’s own words another long title that no one ever would ever get right (it’s a quote from the book, but it was her publishers idea to use it as the title). Being called Kim Philips van Buren – I know the feeling :).
Helene 3
And because of this, I am called the Dutchess:

  • To honor Helene Hanff
  • To try sharing my life, my thoughts and my dreams like she did (simple, warm, funny and sweet)
  • To remind myself to never stop enjoying and playing
  • And to remind myself to not take my life – and my business – so seriously
  • (O, and my studio ate the fort is the Dutchess castle)P1020940b
  • (and yes, the spelling is wrong: the extra “T” means I’m DuTch :)

So, that explains the DuTchess part – but what about the color “ORANGE”, and who is that mysterious Mr. Orange?

I’ll tell you about that later!

Workshop 6 december: kerstkaarten

What I’m working on

The last couple of weeks I’ve been working on this painting. It’s not finished yet, but I wanted to show it to you anyway. It started with something inside of me saying: “Now you have it all, and you still dream about flying away…….”. It felt like something was wrong. I had been playing in my studio almost everyday and loving it. But at night I couldn’t sleep and when I slept, I dreamed about leaving.

I finally posted  on Facebook, and was amazed by the responses it got. They all generally said: “Why don’t you? Just fly!”

And somehow, that is opening something new inside of me.

My studio is my dream, but no one said I need to stop dreaming now….

Justifying myself and my art

Starting my own studio is the right thing to do, I know this in my heart. But sometimes sharing this with other people can create responses that are not always easy to deal with, like:

But……..……..do you think what you make is good enough to get people to come to your workshops?

What a strange question.

Yes, I do believe I have something to say.

Something that will mean something to someone.

No, I’m not an art-guru :), but I have a heart worth loving, a soul worth knowing and a voice that has something to say.

My studio is open for people to come and share my path.

I am Blessed

Three months ago there was an add in the local newspaper, in the council notifications sector – which I usually don’t read.

But this time I was bored and read it all.

My heart jumped when I read there was a space for rent in the centre of town inside a hundred-and-fifty year old fort.

It’s located in the most beautiful part of Weesp and just perfect for me.

Two months later I had the key.

Two days later I moved in.

Two hours after that I felt like I had come home.

Kickstarting myself

Oke.

This is it.

It’s about time to get started.

It’s annoying me to death I’m having so much trouble starting this blog .

If I’m not afraid of a BIG white piece of paper, not afraid of a blank canvas and not afraid of an empty journalpage – then why am I so afraid of a new and empty blog? Or am I just telling myself I am, because I think I should be…….

But not any more. It’s time to jump right in.

Right now I’m looking at a painting I made a few weeks ago. Around the painting it says:

When you come to the edge of all things you know,

you must believe one of two things will happen:

there will be something solid for you to stand upon, or.….

you will be taught how to fly.

So let’s start acting to my beliefs!

After all: practice makes perfect.
